One bad guided tour can be enough to put you off the idea entirely – but a really good guide (and you can rest assured, we only work with the absolute best) can turn what an uninspiring box-ticking exercise into an experience you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

What it comes down to is this: there’s a difference between seeing and understanding, and the only way to bridge that gap is to get stuck in. No amount of looking will ever tell you as much about a Hanoian wet market than a morning spent shopping with a local chef – and if you don’t jump on the back of a vintage Vespa, how will you ever know how exhilarating it feels to zip through the streets of Saigon?

Triem Tay, on the rural fringes of Hoi An, is home to nearly 150 families whose livelihoods still revolve around traditional activities such as farming and sedge-weaving.

Spending a day here is a wonderful chance to slow the pace and appreciate the rhythms of rural Vietnam, as you meet the village elders, hear stories about local life, and have a go at some of the local crafts. You’ll also get to see first-hand how an organic farm has been revitalising the local community through sustainable agriculture and ecotourism, and enjoy some of its delicious produce with a home-cooked lunch before you return to town by boat on the Thu Bon River.

You'll begin the day with a visit to the private collection of Suzanne Lecht, where you'll see works by some of Vietnam’s most exciting emerging artists.
