First and lasting impressions of Burma (Myanmar): Bagan, Inle Lake and Ogre Island

DSC02779

Having wandered through 50 countries, Becky's quite the traveler! She now finds herself assisting our Small Group Tours team in Bristol and has only good words to say about Burma (Myanmar).

First impressions of Burma (Myanmar), do I need glasses?

If you are questioning your eyesight after visiting some of Burma’s most famous destinations, I can assure you that you don't need glasses. It's just an ethereal haze that blankets this country like Kipling would rightfully have you believe. I promise it’s not pollution.

Joking aside, there really is nothing like getting up to watch the sunrise over the pagoda-studded plains of Bagan. It's actually listed in The Telegraph as one of the best places in the world to take a hot air balloon ride (along with our native Bristol, of course...). Hop aboard a basket and get a bird's eye view over the stupas.

What to do at Inle Lake

Meander your way around Inle Lake’s local villages and artisan huts on a longtail boat, and set aside some time to wander past the lacquerware, black Pearls and Lotus Silk workshops.

How to travel

Despite the mountainous backdrop it is actually relatively flat, so cycling here is a great option.

Food & Drink

There’s a great little tucked away restaurant called Bamboo Hut. It's on the North West side of the lake and serves incredible fresh fish. Also take a visit to Red Mountain Estate Vineyard - you can pump up your cycle ride with a wine tasting!

Burmese people

I took these photos after being invited to a child’s birthday party whilst walking past the celebrations. The incredibly welcoming nature of the Burmese people is completely contrasted by the name of this particular island – Ogre Island. It's accessed from Mawlamyine and was historically inhabited by cannibals.

The key word here being historically – don’t worry, everyone returns from their vacations whole and seasoning-free.
