6 fabulous honeymoon retreats in Burma

Ngapali Beach

With grand colonial hotels, tropical beach resorts, luxurious river vessels, lakeside retreats and chartered yachts, you're spoilt for choice when it comes to honeymoon accommodation in Burma. Not that there's any reason you shouldn't visit these beautiful places at any other time, of course - but if you're looking for something just that little bit special, you've found it here.

1. Sandoway Resort, Ngapali

Burma is not renowned as a beach destination – but this is probably for the best. The fewer people know about Ngapali the better! One of our favourite place to enjoy this beautiful stretch of sand on the Bay of Bengal is the Sandoway Resort, which offers romantic two-storey villas set amongst shady palms and tropical gardens just steps from the beach.

2. Belmond Governor’s Residence, Yangon

For colonial grandeur in Burma’s capital, there is nowhere better than The Belmond Governor’s Residence. Formerly the retreat of the Governor of the British Crown Colony of Burma, the hotel is housed in a 1920s teakwood mansion, set apart from the bustle of the city and surrounded by a leafy garden – complete with lily pond.

3. Villa Inle, Inle Lake

All guests to Villa Inle arrive to the resort by traditional longtail boat, propelled by one of the region’s famous leg-rowing oarsmen. This peaceful journey along the quiet waterways adds to the romance of the Villa Inle experience, and the resort itself certainly doesn’t disappoint. We recommend requesting a lakefront villa, each of which comes with a spacious private veranda overlooking the beautiful expanse of Inle – the perfect place for a quiet drink at sunset.

4. Burma Boating, Myeik Archipelago

The Myeik Archipelago, a collection of pristine islands scattered throughout the Andaman Sea, is a paradise virtually untouched by tourism. With all the beauty of the Thai Islands (and none of the crowds), this is a stunning and secluded addition to any Burmese honeymoon. One of the best ways to enjoy the archipelago to its fullest is on a yacht – whether you opt for a luxurious room on a shared vessel, or go the whole hog to charter your own. Burma Boating is our favourite choice in the region.

5. Bagan Lodge, Bagan

Opened in 2013, Bagan Lodge is a wonderful shady retreat for visitors exploring the ancient pagodas of Bagan. Each semi-detached villa is shaded by a tented roof, and there is an elegant safari theme throughout that lends an Indiana Jones-esque sense of adventure and exploration. The accommodation is arranged around a lovely central pool, so this is a fantastic place to escape the heat of the plains.

6. Sanctuary Ananda Cruise, Mandalay

One of the best ways to explore some of the more remote corners of Burma is by boat, and there are various cruise lines that operate routes along the Chindwin and Irrawaddy Rivers. One of the most luxurious is the Sanctuary Ananda Cruise, a beautifully crafted ship with exceptionally spacious suites, private balconies, outstanding restaurants and a range of exciting itineraries.
