"Myanmar was the one we all fell in love with" BBC: Dara & Ed's Road to Mandalay
Head to BBC iPlayer to watch comedians Ed Byrne and Dara O'Briain embark on a 3,500 mile journey from the towering skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur, through bustling Bangkok, and across the beautiful expansive country that is Burma (Myanmar).
Burma (Myanmar), "Holiday in living history" - Dara O'Briain
Dara describes their trip as a "holiday in living history". Burma (Myanmar) is changing, yet often feels frozen in time with centuries-old traditions that are still practised today. In the rural village of Pan Pet, the Kayan people engage them in a traditional fortune-telling ritual, and on Inle Lake, the community allow Dara and Ed (somewhat amusingly) to join a one-legged rowing race. But when joining jovial revellers at a village rocket festival that has been celebrated for over 300 years, Dara looks up at the sky-high spectacle and, without a hint of irony, puts in on a par with a rocket launch he saw at NASA.
Overawed by the landscape, they fall silent while contemplating thousands of pagodas across the plains of Bagan, and reaching the end of this mammoth journey, declare:
"Myanmar was the one we all fell in love with".
